How to create new Project Templates

Creating a project template means you can save time by pre-populating your new project with the specifications, clauses, options, and appendix documents from an existing project. This is a great idea if you do a lot of projects with similar materials, design, etc.

Templates are still created from existing projects, so you will need to have a project available in your account prior to creating a template.

If you're familiar with the functionality and layout of the Project Dashboard, then the new Template Dashboard will be very familiar.

1. To create a new Project Template:

• Open an existing project from which you would like to create the new template
• Under Project Actions - select Create Project Template
• Enter a Template Name and click Add Project Template

2. To create a new project from the template:

Either select Add Project from Template from the Projects tab in the navigation bar

or click on the Templates tab and select Project Templates

Both of these paths will take you to the main Templates list. Here you can select the template you wish to use for your new project.

Next, open the template you want to use and select Create Project from the TEMPLATE ACTIONS button like so

3. Editing or Deleting Project Templates:

As noted above, Project Templates now function like Projects, this means you can add or remove  specifications, add or remove appendix attachments, update existing specs, or delete the entire template if needed.

4. Archived Project Templates

This tab contains the templates created using the old template functionality (any template created in Smartspec prior to May 2023).

The templates in here can still be used to create projects if you wish, though they lack the functionality of the newer template function, and we've removed the ability for you to create new templates of this type.

If you are a regular user of project templates, our advice would be to migrate your existing templates to the new template format (feel free to give us a call if you get stuck on this step).

At some point in the future we will remove this tab completely, so please migrate your content sooner rather than later.
